ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - The District Attorney’s office has given APD the all-clear in the shooting death of a man who’s only weapon in hand was a kitchen spoon.
Alan Gomez is one of the 18 fatal police shootings at the hands of APD since 2010.
The DA’s office – like all police shootings they’ve reviewed – has ruled that it was justified.
It was two years ago when Alan Gomez ran into his brother’s house in a paranoid, drug-induced state.
That led to a police standoff.
Officer Sean Wallace testified he thought Gomez was holding a gun and that the two people inside were in imminent danger when he shot and killed Gomez.
But Gomez wasn’t holding a gun – it turned out to be a cooking spoon.
“If they can justify an unarmed man with no intent, what can't they justify?” asked Alan’s father, Mike Gomez.
Brandenberg wasn’t available for an interview.
The Gomez family attorney questions how unbiased a DA review of an officer-involved shooting case can be.
